Kids of all ages are invited to take part in our exciting educational and fun Animal Crew events, which are jam-packed with animal activities.
Can you think of a better way for your young animal lovers to learn about animals, make friends, play outrageous games, and hang out and help some amazing animals all at the same time? At Wellington SPCA’s Animal Crew events, kids can do all of these things.
Different events see kids learning how to do everything from training, caring for and being a responsible animal guardian, to making our community a safer place for our pets. Kids are not the only ones who will have fun – we will also be spending a lot of time with our centre animals. We are happy to offer this opportunity to mature, respectful young people.
We are looking for kids who want to build on their love of furry friends by learning how to provide a lifetime of love and care for companion animals. Our Animal Crew programmes are designed to promote kindness and compassion for all animals. Animal Crew combines animal care and behaviour learning activities, team projects, craft activities, and hands-on interactions with animals such as cats, kittens, dogs, rabbits, rats and more!
See below for further information on Animal Crew opportunities.

Wellington SPCA hosts birthday parties and other Animal Crew events to raise funds to support the delivery of education services in our community. The price charged for parties ensures we cover building, supply and staff costs with a small margin left for profit (this being the fundraising component.) Although our parties are unique, the price charged is comparable with other party services offered in the region.
$300 for a 2 hour party – we allow 20 minutes either side of start time for pack-in, pack-out, and this includes up to 14 children (due to space and safety limitations)
$130 for each additional hour should you choose to have a longer party
$30 for an additional birthday present, in the event that the party is for more than one child, e.g. an SPCA soft toy, Animal Crew water bottle, Animal Crew drawstring backpack, Animal Crew pin badge and $15 event voucher
Animal welfare education provides a unique opportunity to allow learners to develop further empathy towards not only animals but people as well. Our experienced educators visit approximately 10,000 students a year, across the Wellington region, teaching about the SPCA in our community, caring for animals, dog safety, animal careers and more.
We would love to come and visit your school or at-risk group. Our skilled educators will present age-appropriate, fun, interactive and curriculum-linked material to your classes. The programme can be modified to fit in with current lesson plans and includes a teacher’s pack full of useful information and resources.
We hope young people will take the knowledge and skills they learn through this programme to make responsible adult decisions in the future, treating not only their animals, but their families and friends, with kindness and respect as well.
We deliver an interactive presentation looking at the role of the SPCA, and what animals require from us to have a healthy and happy life. These presentations are offered to individual classes, syndicates and larger groups. Presentations last approximately 1 hour.
Workshops are a great way to reinforce the presentation’s content and are organised to take place following the presentation. We help young people put into practice the ideas and knowledge imparted during our presentation. Workshops are generally run with one class at a time, and last approximately 40 minutes per session (multiple sessions can be added as needed).
Tour of our Centre
Centre tours provide a great learning experience outside the classroom (LEOTC) opportunity, getting students out to see behind the scenes at Wellington SPCA. This option is open to groups of up to 30 at a time, and last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour per session (multiple sessions can be added as needed).

Our education programme receives no direct government funding for the work we do in our community. We rely entirely on the generosity of individuals just like you.
You can help our organisation by encouraging your students and colleagues to fundraise in support of Wellington SPCA. Inspiring children to fundraise for the SPCA encourages social responsibility, and helps students understand how they can make a difference in their community. As a registered charity we depend on donations to continue our vital work.
There are many ways you can fundraise and below are some popular ideas for schools:
Host a mufti, crazy hair or fancy dress day.
Collect tinned kitten or puppy food, old soft toys, and towels.
Organise a stall and sell baked goods, second-hand items etc. Visit spcacupcakeday.co.nz to learn more about our national baking event in August.
Take turns volunteering to help collect in your area during our Annual Appeal collection in November.
Organise a school concert, dance or other event and charge an entry fee.
Create a coin trail in the shape of an animal.
To find out more about how your school can help, check out our Fundraising at School section.
Once your fundraising event has been completed, please let us know about it, so we can arrange an official ‘thank you’ presentation.

Check out our Animal Liaison and Community Engagement Manager, Nicholas Taylor’s recent interview as part of a series of teacher resources by Ministry for Primary Industries.
Our Community Engagement Team would be happy to come and speak to your community group or organise a tour of our Newtown Centre. We have age-appropriate talks and activities for groups of all ages including young groups catered towards scouts, guides and cadets, as well as adult groups designed for business, church and senior groups.
Off-site talks usually last about 1 hour and centre tours take about 1.5 hours. Talks can cater to current learning objectives including the SPCA in the community, animal care, dog safety, how you can help and more.
Special interactive activities can also be designed to provide more hands-on learning opportunities for those involved. We aim to deliver a high quality service that encourages kindness and respect towards animals and that will be remembered.
For visits during our normal business hours of Monday to Friday (between 9am and 5pm) we ask for a minimum donation of $90 to cover the costs of offering this service.
For visits outside our normal business hours, we ask for a minimum donation of $135 to cover the costs of offering this service.
Puppy kisses, kitten cuddles and bunny nuzzles! Can you imagine a better way to help your workplace or university group take a much needed time out from hectic work schedules?
We can come and visit your group and offer everyone an opportunity to Paws and Relax by spending time with specially selected SPCA animals!
For us, our animals receive great publicity as well as that oh-so-important socialisation. Depending on what is available on the day of your booking, we may bring along puppies, rabbits, guinea pigs or kittens. All animals are vet checked and temperament assessed before visiting.
We never leave the SPCA without our 'animal kit', which is baby bag for animals. The kit includes everything needed to clean up any accidents, sanitise hands and keep the animals entertained while we are there. A parking space nearby and a separate room with non-carpeted floors is ideal to set up in.
Our Press Paws and Relax visits last for about 45 minutes, and provide us with an opportunity to fundraise. We ask for a minimum donation of $200 to cover our costs and contribute to our vital work in the community.
If this sounds like something that would work for your workplace or university group, please click here and complete the form.
The rules about animal contact are reaffirmed before moving between each section of the centre and when interacting with animals in off-site visits.
