Why Adopt from SPCA

By rescuing an animal in need and giving them a home for life you’ll be rewarded with a lifetime of unconditional love from your new companion.

ADOPT AN ANIMAL IN NEED

Every year, thousands of animals of all shapes, sizes and ages come into Wellington SPCA. All of them have an individual story to tell and all of them deserve a second chance at life.

Many are simply lost pets or unwanted litters of puppies or kittens. Others have been abandoned or have suffered from cruelty or neglect. Some are here because their owners could simply no longer care for them.

You can rescue an animal in need by giving them a loving home for life.

FIND THE RIGHT PET FOR YOU

Our animal care and adoption staff will match you with the right pet for your lifestyle. We want every animal to find the right home, so we will talk with you to understand your lifestyle and needs. Once we know what you’re looking for in a pet, we will help you select the right animal for you. If you’ve got the time and the love, we’ve got the pet to suit your family.

EXPERT ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE

Our team will provide you with advice on caring for your new pet and settling them into your home. After adoption, we are happy to help with advice or answer any concerns you may have about your new pet.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR YOUR NEW PET

The SPCA has a pet shop on-site, so stocking up on everything you need is easy. From essentials such as food, collars and leads, to toys, treats and bedding – if you buy direct from the SPCA, you will not only get a great price but also have access to expert advice. Plus all proceeds go towards helping other animals in need!

GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY

Our adoption fees represent great value for money. When you adopt from the SPCA, your new pet is all ready to go. We ensure all animals are healthy and prepared for their new home prior to adoption. The preparation is:

  • Vet checked and healthy
  • Behavioural assessment
  • Desexed (except for female rats and female guinea pigs)
  • First vaccinations (pets may require further vaccinations at the owners expense)
  • Wormed
  • Treated for fleas
  • Microchipped

Your adoption fee also helps us to rescue other animals in need.

HOW TO ADOPT

Our adoption process is individual to each and every applicant, so please allow plenty of time when you come in to meet the animals available. Also, please note that we don't adopt animals as surprise presents for other people. You are welcome to buy a voucher to cover the adoption fee, but they will need to come in and find the animal that's right for them.
