How to adopt an animal

When you adopt from the SPCA, our expert animal team will take the time to match you to the right pet for your family. We will talk with you to understand your lifestyle and needs before helping you to select the right pet for you and the right home for every animal.

Our adoption process is individual to each and every applicant, so please allow plenty of time when you come in to meet the animals available for adoption. Please note that we do not adopt animals as surprise presents for other people. However, you can buy a voucher from us to cover the adoption fee. The recipient of the voucher will then need to come in and find the animal that's right for them.

We operate a no time limit policy for all the animals we have available for adoption, which means that we will care for them until we find them the very best home.

1. BROWSE ANIMAL PROFILES ONLINE

View some of the animals available for adoption on this website or on our Facebook page. Not every animal is on the website as new animals come in every day. We don't put individual kittens on the website as they get adopted so quickly.

2. VISIT THE ANIMALS IN PERSON

Come and view the animals available for adoption at the SPCA at 140 Alexandra Road, Newtown, Wellington or at our Waikanae Centre, Main Road North, Waikanae. We're open to the public 7 days a week from 10am to 4pm. You’re welcome to come and have a look around and chat to the team.

We also have cats and kittens in foster who only attend community adoption events. To meet these animals please contact our Animal Care Team on 04 389 8044 or head to one of our community adoption events

3. TALK TO AN EXPERT AT THE SPCA

Our friendly animal team will help you choose the pet that’s right for you. They will discuss your lifestyle, experience level and what you’re looking for. They will also discuss the needs of the animals, and ensure your living situation will suit the animal you are interested in adopting.

4. FILL IN THE PAPERWORK

Once you've found the pet you want, we will need to get some more detailed information from you. Our team will discuss what we need with you to facilitate your adoption. Dogs require a bit more information than cats and small animals, e.g. an inspection of your property.

5. INTRODUCE YOUR FAMILY (DOGS ONLY)

Found your new best friend? The next step is introducing them to your existing family – everyone in the family, including your existing dog(s) must meet the new dog prior to adoption.

6. SIGN UP

We want you to think through the decision to adopt a pet very carefully and be fully aware of the commitment, costs, challenges and legal obligations that come with pet ownership.

You need to be able to afford both the day-to-day care of your new pet, as well as any unexpected vet bills if your pet gets sick or injured. When you consider your future plans, does a new pet fit in with these? If the answer is yes to all of the above, then it’s time to make it official. We'll just need you to sign up and pay the adoption fee and get ready to bring home the new member of your family.

7. SHOP

Before you leave the SPCA, make sure you pop into the SPCA pet supplies shop for expert advice and everything you'll need for your new pet! All profits help us protect Wellington's animals.
