Older folk will recall the days when trains between Wellington and Auckland used to stop at Taumarunui for ‘ten minutes for refreshments'.
There was just time to dash into the tearooms, order a cup of tea and a pie or slice of fruit cake and leap back onto the train. I wasn't the only passenger who'd occasionally souvenir a Railways cup and saucer for my flat. They are long gone but lately I've seen these cups highly priced in antique shops.
The former New Zealand broadcaster Frank Harding once told a friend of mine about a parrot which lived in the Taumarunui tearooms many years ago.
Just as people started queuing at the counter, intent on getting their cuppa, the parrot would let out a loud noise – an exact imitation of the sound made by a train taking off from the platform. Naturally everyone ran frantically outside in pursuit of the train … which was, of course, still at rest. Left behind in the tearooms, the parrot would cackle heartily, showing it knew exactly what it had done.
