Microchipped & reunited, and it feels so good

Zambi and his brother

Zambi (on the right) and his brother were adopted from the Cats Protection League last August. Four months ago, Zambi went missing from his new home. Yesterday morning he was brought into our Newtown Centre by a member of the public with a suspected leg injury. During our examination, we found his microchip, and were able to look up where he belonged on the New Zealand Companion Animals Register. This meant we were happily able to get him back to his proper home and his brother before lunchtime!

Microchips are a small device about the size of a grain of rice. The microchip is implanted in the soft scruff of the neck. The microchip has a unique number that can be read by a special reader, similar to a barcode reader. This number is stored in the  NZCA register with your contact details.

We strongly encourage all pet owners to get their animals microchipped so that if they ever go missing, a happy ending like Zambi’s  is more likely. We offer a microchipping and registration service at our Newtown Animal Centre, and your local vet probably does as well.

Pepper … the perfect performance

This is Pepper (as a puppy), previously known to us as Bee, who was adopted from our Newtown animal centre in October 2009 as a three-month-old pup.

Pepper celebrated her second birthday last week and just to show how awesome a dog she has become, owner Emily has shared this video with us. Enjoy.

If you would like to adopt one of the many awesome dogs currently in our care waiting for their forever home, check out our adoption pages or pay us a visit.

Sam gets his Second Chance

With our Second Chance for Love adopt-a-thon just around the corner, here’s a tale of a super-pooch who is proof that everyone deserves a Second Chance!

Sam, formally knowns as Nate, had been in our care before as a puppy and was first adopted from us about four years ago. Unfortunately the later addition of a new baby into his owners’ family proved a little too much and with ‘Nate’s' best interests in mind, they surrendered him back to Wellington SPCA in November of last year.

But his stay with us second time around was thankfully short-lived … all thanks to Christine!

She had come into our Newtown centre with an open mind but with the hope of finding a dog that was toilet-trained, “walked like a butterfly on a lead” and would be calm around her elderly mother. After spending time speaking with all of our canine caregivers and meeting the dogs, it was Sam who caught her eye;

“Initially I met Jenny who introduced me to Sam, who I fell in love with. He totally fits the bill. It’s less than three weeks into his adoption and I can’t imagine life without him.”

Whilst not only being the peaceful and calm dog Christine was looking for, Sam also romps and plays with Christine’s 20 year-old son, showing he clearly has a frisky side too! And from the photos, it’s pretty clear to see that he’s a very contented happy dog in his new home.

”I just wanted to say what a great experience it was adopting Sam from the SPCA – I’d never go anywhere else than the SPCA to find a dog.”

The SPCA’s Second Chance for Love adopt-a-thon is a great event – we aim to find homes for 1,000 animals nationwide. Come along to our Newtown or Waikanae animal centres and you might just fall in love!

Moana Up Close

Moana and CorinneYou may remember back in June that one of our long-term cats, Moana, was adopted following our Free Feline Friday event.

Moana became a star after Corinne Ambler, a reporter for TVNZ’s Close Up, featured the notoriously grumpy tabby in her coverage of the extraordinary day at our Newtown animal centre.

Corinne fell in love with her at first sight and just had to adopt her. Six months later, the two are the best of friends and Moana has lost just a little of her feisty streak … but not too much!

The pair were again featured on Close Up last night, along with Melinda, one of our feline caregivers, who knew Moana from when she first arrived at the centre.

You can check out the show here.

Moana’s story goes to show why Wellington SPCA’s no time limit policy is a success – we will never give up trying to find the best outcome for every animal in our care.

Elvis has left the building

ElvisIt was a real-life case of ‘you were always on my mind’.

After setting eyes on five year-old Elvis at one of our off-site adoption events recently, soon-to-be new owner Kaye fell in love with him at first sight and knew he was the one for her.

Kaye sadly lost her previous cat to cancer a year ago and had decided she couldn’t put herself through such heartbreak again. However, one look at the striking slick black-haired puss changed all that and earlier last week Kaye flew down from her home in Auckland to collect her new best friend from our Waikanae animal centre.

Soon enough, Elvis was settling into his new home and taking time to bond with Kaye’s husband. Things didn’t quite get off to a flying start between the two however, with Elvis receiving a reprimand for scratching the carpet. Elvis thought that 2 am in the morning might be the right time to make amends, but apparently not…!

However, it’s safe to say that neither Kaye, Elvis or Kaye’s husband will ever be ‘lonesome tonight’ and we wish them all the best for the future.

Why microchips work

A microchipA cat that disappeared from a home in Mount Victoria, Wellington in January 2009 was yesterday reunited with its ecstatic owner.

The missing moggy, named Oscar, had been seen hanging around a property in the Wellington suburb of Roseneath and was brought into our Newtown centre by a member of the public who decided he was a stray.

A quick scan confirmed that Oscar had a microchip, so staff called the mobile number stored on the database straight away. And sure enough, Oscar’s owner was over the moon to hear that his pal had been found and, as he was in the area, called in to the centre to collect Oscar the same day!!

Microchipping is a quick, easy and relatively painless procedure and can be the difference between losing your pal forever, or being reunited – even after nearly two years!

Call us today to find out how you can get your pet microchipped with us.

Some facts about microchipping

  • Inserting a microchip is a quick, relatively painless procedure
  • It costs $30 to microchip a dog or cat with Wellington SPCA – including registration on the New Zealand Companion Animal Database
  • A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and has a unique identification number
  • You must remember to keep your details up-to-date on the database, especially if you move house – and that includes the details for your alternative contact person

Sarah – an update

UPDATE: From time to time the dynamics of a family into which the animal has been adopted don’t quite work out for everyone concerned and unfortunately it would seem that this has been the case for Sarah.

Needless to say, regrettable though it is, Sarah has come back into our care and will remain with us until we are able to find the most suitable environment for her to be adopted in to.

If you think that you may be able to offer Sarah a loving forever home, then we’d love to hear from you.

And please don’t forget – we currently have over 300 animals in our care and many of them are in need of a new, loving forever home – just like the one we found for Sarah.

If you think you can adopt an animal from us, please check out our ‘Adopt a pet’ page. Or you can support us and help us care for all of these animals by making a donation - we rely entirely on donations to carry out our work.

Bunny bonanza!

RabbitThis week (10 – 18 July) is ‘Bunny Hop’ week.

As a result of some fantastic media coverage in The Dominion Post, TV One’s Good Morning show, ZM radio and Newstalk ZB, we are so pleased that all of the rabbits currently in our care now have adoptions pending!

Not only that, but two of the rabbits we were caring for, ‘Calpurnia’ and ‘Boudicca’, have now been reunited with their owner.

BUT, there are still more rabbits that are in need of homes who are just not at our Newtown centre at the moment. If you are able to offer a home to a rabbit, please still give us a call – we still need your help!

Don’t forget, we’ve always got lots of other animals in need of loving new homes, so be sure to check out our website for all the animals we currently have available for adoption.

Searching high and low

Willow and Jet

Willow and Jet

Finding homes for the thousands of animals that come into our care is a huge task.

One of our rehoming initiatives is to encourage potential adopters to come and meet our animals at locations other than our centres in Newtown and Waikanae. These ‘off-site’ adoption events have taken place at all sorts of places including scout halls, schools and surf clubs!

One of the most recent adoption events saw us joining forces with Capital City Motors, who generously showed their support by converting three of their car showrooms into temporary adoption hot-spots! Capital City staff also stepped up to the challenge by kindly volunteering their help on the day!

Setting up the showroom

The event was a fantastic success with about a dozen animals finding a new home.

Kittens ’Serena’ and ‘Toby’ were just two of the lucky ones to find loving new owners. Vanessa Henshaw and Mike Clephane fell in love with the two cuties after calling in to one of Capital City’s showrooms. The kittens, now renamed Willow and Jet, instantly become part of their new family.

They settled in very well right from the first night we brought them home,” said Vanessa. “They both have fantastic personalities and are great to have around – we love them to bits“.

Vanessa and Mike didn’t just become the recipients of two very cute kittens. During the event we ran a special offer – anyone adopting from us on the day were automatically enteredinto a draw to win one night’s accommodation at luxury hotel ‘ohtel‘, as well as $150 worth of vouchers kindly donated by Capital City Ford. Vanessa and Mike won, and plan to stay at the hotel to help celebrate Vanessa’s imminent birthday! Congratulations!

During March, we ran another special adult cat adoption promotion in which we were able to offer another winner a night’s accommodation at ‘ohtel’. That prize was won by John and Anna Carter of Waikanae who had become the proud owners of  ’Harry’.

You can check out just some of the animals in need of loving forever homes on our website and if you can adopt one of them, please give us a call on 04 389 8044!

All loved up

Love well and truly blossomed for some of Wellington SPCA’s homeless animals this Valentine’s weekend.

Our ‘Second chance for love’ adopt-a-thon proved that love was definitely in the air, with new homes being found for almost 60 of our animals. Braving the temperamental Wellington weather, a huge number of people visited our animal centres in Newtown, Waikanae and Levin and for some it proved to be love at first sight!

Dean Thompson (pictured) visited our Newtown centre hoping to find the perfect kitten – and instead ended up falling for two! Two-month old Jaffa and Peanut caught Dean’s eye and were soon heading off to start their new lives in Wellington, helped along with some goodies provided courtesy of Hill’s Pet Nutrition™.

Of  the 60 animals who found new homes over the weekend, one of the most heart-warming stories belongs to Chelsi, a two-year-old Labrador crossbreed. Chelsi was found by the local pound living in car and was brought to the Newtown animal centre. She stayed for over six months, but as a result of Second Chance for Love, will very soon be settling into her new loving forever home.

Norm Hewitt and family (with Geppetto the rabbit)

Norm Hewitt & family

The event also received support from SPCA Ambassador Norm Hewitt, who paid a visit to our Newtown centre with his wife and children. Norm leads the SPCA’s ’One of the family’ programme that promotes the importance of companion animals being part of the family and responsible pet ownership. Norm and family spent some time checking out the centre as well as getting cuddles from Geppetto the lop-eared rabbit!

Congratulations go to Debbie Brown of Island Bay who won the SPCA hamper after visiting the adopt-a-thon at our Newtown animal centre and simply completed a sign-in form!

Remember, you can still vote for your favourite SPCA centre at www.secondchanceforlove.co.nz and if you adopted an animal over the weekend, submit your story and photo to be in with a chance of winning a year’s supply of pet food from Hill’s Pet Nutrition™.
