Our Newtown centre is full

We are caring for an exceptionally large number of animals at the moment and as a result we need to limit the number of animals coming to our Newtown centre. This is essential so that we can prevent outbreaks of disease and problems associated with overcrowding.

How you can help

If you are no longer able to care for your pet

Please do everything you can to try and find it a new home. Things you can try are:

  • Put an advert up on www.petsonthenet.co.nz – this is free and is used by people all over NZ
  • Put flyers up in your local community asking for a new home for your pet. Don’t be afraid to go and visit a potential new owner’s home and have a chat with them about caring for your pet
  • Ask all your family, friends, friends of friends and workmates if they are able to care for your pet
  • Contact other animal welfare organisations to see if they have space
  • Post your story on Facebook, Twitter etc. to get people to help you
  • If you have exhausted all of the options above, then we will put your pet on a waiting list but please be aware that we cannot guarantee that a space will become available soon.

Adopt

One of the best things you could do to help us would be to adopt one of the kittens, dogs, cats, puppies and rabbits in our care. Not only will you be giving an animal a wonderful second chance at a great life, but you’ll free up some valuable space that will enable us to care for another animal in need.

If you have any concerns about the health or welfare of your pet, or any other animal, you should contact your neareast vet or alternatively call us for advice at any time on 04 389 8044.

Help. I’m hungry, homeless and in need of a hug

Kitten

It’s time for you to show us just how brilliant you are – AGAIN!

We are in desperately short supply of  all of the following things – and we need your help! All of these things can be dropped off to our Newtown animal centre.

  • Wet kitten food – any kind, any brand – the kittens are not fussy!
  • Clean linen (towels, sheets, pillow cases) – anything that’s clean and warm
  • Snuggly blankets – these are essential for keeping all of our animals warm in winter. And we don’t really need any more puppy jumpers – blankets are best!!
  • We also REALLY need foster parents. In just two days last week we had 31 kittens brought to us, as well as a mum with her litter of kittens. We don’t have room for them at our centre. If you can give an animal a temporary home, please call us immediately on 04 389 8044 ext: 0

Thank you!!

News about Nessie

NessieLast week we made a very special plea about Nessie, the beautiful cat currently in our care who is suffering from the condition Hyperthyroidism.

Our great friends at Wadestown Vets had very kindly offered to provide Nessie with the radioactive iodine treatment that will hopefully rid her of her condition.

Despite their fabulous offer to provide this at a reduced cost to us, we still needed to raise the remaining funds to pay for Nessie’s treatment.

And that’s where our supporters have proven to us something we already knew … that they are awesome!! We decided to close the appeal this afternoon as the donations we had received had well and truly blown our target of $495 out of the water!!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that due to the amazing generosity of our supporters, we have received a staggering $1,780 for the Nessie appeal!!

This amazing result means that not only will Nessie be able to receive the treatment she needs, but we’ve also been able to make a fantastic opening contribution to the fund we’ve set up that will enable us to provide care for other animals that may require specialist treatment.

We are funded entirely by donations. We do not receive any government funding and rely on the generosity of our supporters to enable us to provide our life-saving work for thousands of animals every year. If you would like to make a contribution to help other animals like Nessie, then we would love to hear from you – head to our donation page.

We’ll keep you posted on Nessie’s progress and hope to be able to report that she’s heading to her new forever home as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Nessie needs your help

Nessie

We often make special pleas here on our website for animals in our care that desperately need to find their loving forever home – and we often see them heading out the door soon afterwards.

This time we have a very different ask, but one we hope you can support us with.

Meet Nessie – a super-friendly, cuddly eight year-old cat who’s been in our care since February. She had been seen hanging around a nearby Wellington suburb for about three years, but no-one appeared to be claiming ownership of her, so when a concerned resident noticed she was starting to lose weight, they brought her to us.

Our veterinary team gave Nessie a full check and discovered she had a condition called Hyperthyroidism – a common hormonal disorder occurring in elderly cats caused by an increase in production and secretion of the thyroid hormone. Thankfully, the condition is treatable, but one method would involve Nessie receiving daily medication for the rest of life – a huge financial burden for us to carry if she were to remain in our care.

The thing is, other than this specific condition, Nessie is in great health and as a result, our vets believe that she is a fantastic candidate to receive radioactive iodine treatment. This special procedure not only selectively destroys the affected thyroid tissue and any other areas of tissue that may be inaccessible by surgery, but also doesn’t have any serious side-effects, doesn’t require an anaesthetic and reduces the likelihood of the condition reoccurring.

However, we do not have the facilities to carry out this treatment but the awesome team at Wadestown veterinary clinic have very kindly stepped up and have offered to give Nessie the radioactive iodine treatment  - and for $200 less than the normal price. However, the treatment will still cost us $495.

This is where you come in!!

Please make a donation today to help this very special cat. Go to our website to make a donation online or call our donation hotline on 04 389 7387. Please make sure you clearly state that your donation is for the ‘Nessie the cat appeal’.

It would be great if we could exceed our target of $495 and if we do, we’ll set up a fund to go towards helping other animals in our care who may need specialist care or treatment.

Nessie needs this treatment as soon as possible, so we’ve set ourselves the target of 4th April to raise the money. If she receives this treatment, the likelihood is that she’ll be cured of the illness and would be able to be heading off to her loving forever home really soon!

Thank you!

ARU in Christchurch – an update

The ARUFollowing their deployment on Sunday, our awesome volunteer Animal Rescue Unit have been hard at work since arriving in Christchurch.

They have been assisting many of the other organisations involved with the search and rescue mission, as well as the local Canterbury SPCA – reuniting lost pets with their very grateful owners, conducting searches of damaged buildings and helping to rescue trapped animals.

They are keeping their own Facebook page up-to-date with all their news and here are just a few of their updates:

The team came together on a bridge over the Avon river to observe the national silence, all the team are reflecting on how privileged they are to be in the heart of this city at this time. Thinking of the families and friends of people who won’t come home, the people who have been injured, the many who have been displaced and everyone who has been affected by this tragedy
Yesterday at 1:07pm

‎3 cats saved. 2 about to be reunited with their owners, the other is off to the SPCA to be put in custody of care. Then the team are off to attend a call about a dog.

Just finished dinner. Shared the table with the USA LA County TaskForce team and some from NSW. Time to head back to camp for some sleep!

Not only have the guys been coping with some huge and emotionally challenging tasks, they have also been coping with a great deal of media attention they’ve been attracting:

  • TVNZ’s Animal Rescue programme have been following the team around over the last two days filming for a future show
  • The guys were featured on the 6pm news on TV One last night
  • Blair (ARU Manager) is due to be interviewed on the Good Morning show tomorrow and Carolyn Press-McKenzie (Wellington SPCA Board member) appeared on the Good Morning show today to talk about the team in Chch
  • The team has also featured in a number of newspaper articles

They guys have been receiving some fantastic support from all over the country – here’s just some of the comments on the ir Facebook page:

Thanks to the ARU for being their for the animals which are important too. Was good to call them the other day for a cat in the roof. Meant we could move on with searches, while being assured the residents cat was in good hands – Shane Briggs (Programme Leader for the Emergency Management Academy of New Zealand)

Keep up the great work! My heart goes out to all the animals that have no idea what has happened and where their next meal (or cuddle) will come from – Angela Huntley

ARU are entirely unique to Australasia. They are entirely staffed by volunteers and are funded entirely by donations. They provide a specialist technical rescue service for animals.

Show them your support today, not only to help fund the amazing work they are currently doing in Christchurch, but to also enable them continue to provide a life-saving service to animals throughout the year. Make a donation online or call 04 389 7387 to make a credit card donation. Please make sure you say you are supporting the ARU!!

Thank you.

Sending our help to Christchurch

Wellington SPCA's Animal Rescue Unit

Following the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, our voluntary Animal Rescue Unit are being deployed this weekend to help with the rescue efforts.

The team of eight, who are due to leave for Chrsitchurch on Sunday, will be assisting with Urban Rescue Teams in a number of animal-welfare related activities; assisting Canterbury SPCA at their animal centre; carrying out house-to-house searches in evacuation zones and areas of devestation; rescuing any animals that may have been abandoned or are unable to be cared for; and helping to reunite lost animals with their owners.

ARU are all volunteers and their work is funded entirely by donations. They need your help to allow them to continue doing this life-saving work  - please make a donation today.

About ARU

The Animal Rescue Team is a volunteer group that provides a technical rescue service for trapped animals. They specialise in high-angle rescue with an emphasis on the welfare of the trapped animal.

ARU volunteers are trained for situations where animals are stuck on cliffs, in trees, in restricted spaces (like under a house or in between office buildings), or even in holes in the ground. They are also trained to assist animals in Civil Defence emergencies such as the Christchurch earthquake.

The team were recently featured on TVNZ News setting up and training New Zealand’s second-only technical animal rescue group – the Massey University Veterinary Emergency Response Team. Watch the clip here.

Wanted: room to rent – a very special plea

Meg and Dave need a place to live

We want to make a very special plea on behalf of one of our very special dogs and a rather special volunteer.

Meg the dog has spent almost all of the one and a half years of her life with us. Meg is a fabulous dog but needs to become part of a loving forever relationship as soon as possible.

Dave has been a volunteer dog walker for quite some time and has developed a fantastic bond with Meg. Dave and Meg need somewhere to live – together.

So, do you know anyone who has a dog-friendly house with a room to rent, or do you have a room to rent yourself? If you think you may be able to help please call Nick on 04 389 8044 asap.

Thanks.

Donate your doggy’s old digs!

Part of animal welfare inspector’s role is to ensure that animals get appropriate care from their owners. Part of a responsible pet owner’s role is to provide an animal with adequate shelter.

Occasionally our inspectors will help an owner out by providing more appropriate shelter  – especially for those who cannot afford to make the required improvements.

However, for our inspectors to be able to do this, they rely on the generosity of the public to donate their unwanted or used kennels.

So, if you want to help us to help the community, get in touch. We’d love to hear from you if you have a plastic or wood kennel that’s still in good condition – ones with minor repairs aren’t a problem.

And we’re happy to come and collect them  from you if you can’t drop them into our Newtown animal centre.

If you can help, give our inspectors a call today on 04 389 8044 ext. 812.

Thanks!

Keep a cat cosy this winter!

KittensA huge thanks to everyone who has been busying away knitting hundreds of jumpers for our young puppies.

The pups are already feeling the benefits of their winter woolies and look set to keep toasty for the rest of the season!

But it’s not just our puppies who need to keep warm in winter – cats and kittens can feel the cold too. So, if you want to help them keep warm and cosy, or just fancy a change from knitting jumpers, why not knit a lovely snuggly blanket instead?

And what’s great about blankets is that you don’t even need to follow a pattern! The ideal blanket is just a simple square measuring 18 inches by 18 inches and much like puppy jumpers, can be made from any left over spare bits of wool you may have lying around.

Blankets not only keep our cats and kittens warm, but they become the ultimate ‘comfort blanket’. When a cat or kitten is adopted from us they take their blanket with them – something familiar to help with settling in to their new unfamiliar surroundings.

You can send your kitty blankets to either our Newtown or Waikanae animal centres.

I luuurve my cosy blanket!

Thank you!
