Help Wellington SPCA by supporting these Everyday Heroes!

This weekend is the 2012 AMI Round the Bays event, and if you’re not in the run yourself then you can still do your part to raise funds for our animals.

We have four Everyday Heroes in this years’ event who are running in support of Wellington SPCA – they are Ben Hall, Maree Werder, Teresa Alo-Ward and Chrissy Grainer.

If you would like to sponsor any of these runners then it’s simple – just go to www.everydayhero.co.nz , enter one of the names above into the search field and then follow the instructions.

Thank you for your support and thanks to the four heroes who are participating!

Puppy in the Window Event gets Tails Wagging

The windows of Lambton Quay’s The Body Shop will be filled with wagging tails and panting faces this Friday, as six SPCA puppies vie for the chance to find a loving family.

Wellington SPCA will again be holding a ‘Puppy in the Window’ event at the busy The Body Shop store on Lambton Quay store, all in an effort to find homes for a large number of puppies in its care.  The Newtown and Waikanae animal centres are currently looking for homes for over 50 canines.

The six puppies will be on display at the store from midday onwards, with shoppers encouraged to both interact with the animals and take away information on volunteering for Wellington SPCA.

Wellington SPCA spokesperson James Craw says that the event has drawn a lot of attention in past years, and is a unique way for the Society to find positive outcomes for animals in its care.

“It’s a great opportunity for people out on their lunch breaks to come and fall in love with one of the puppies on display, and to talk with our staff about what it means to be a responsible pet owner.”

Wellington SPCA staff will be on hand during the event to answer questions about adopting an animal, as well as to make clear the on-going commitments that puppy and dog owners will typically face.

“It’s important that people are fully informed about the time, effort and money that goes into being a responsible pet owner – we want these puppies to go to good, loving homes where people will look after them,” Mr Craw said.

The Body Shop spokesperson Ansonia Todd-Smith says that it’s an initiative they are delighted to be part of.

“We are proud to provide Wellington SPCA with an opportunity to reach out to the public and encourage the adoption of puppies that are in need of a loving home. We salute Wellington SPCA and their hard work in looking after unwanted and abandoned pets, regaining their health, and ultimately finding a new home where they can receive the love they deserve.”

The adoption fee for the puppies on show will be $295 each, which helps to cover the cost of desexing, microchipping, worming and flea treatment. Prospective owners will be encouraged to go home and think things over before making a final decision to adopt.

Wellington SPCA will be looking to run these events on a regular basis in the future, along with a “kitten in the window” variation. They are currently the only SPCA centre in the country to run an adoption event of this nature.

Wellington Adoptathon a Success!

Wellington SPCA are recovering from a wildly successful weekend of adoptions following a Valentines day-themed adoption drive.

The ‘Unconditional Love’ Adoptathon was held over the weekend from the SPCA’s Wellington and Waikanae centres, with Wellingtonians encouraged to come down and find themselves a furry companion to take home.

In total 62 animals went to new homes as part of this event, bettering the previous number set by Wellington SPCA last year.  At times the Newtown centre was so busy that the SPCA staff were having to juggle multiple adoptions at once.

Of the animals adopted from the Newtown centre, thirty were 30 kittens and 17 were cats.

Feline and Small Animal Team member Frankie Walker says that the Adoptathon was held at just the right time, following a recent surge of animals into the cat run.

“We had recently been inundated with unwanted kittens from around the region, as is usual for this time of year. Fortunately we were able to desex and microchip the majority of them in time to be adopted out this weekend, and we’re extremely happy with the results.”

Frankie confirmed that there are “still plenty of gorgeous cats and kittens left in our cat run to be adopted”.

Now in its fourth year, the 2012 Adoptathon also saw 17 other SPCAs around the country also undertaking to adopt out as many animals as possible, with sponsor Animates on board for the first time.

2012 Wellington SPCA ‘Unconditional Love’ Adoptathon – 11th & 12th February

This weekend (11th & 12th February) is the Wellington SPCA’s ‘Unconditional Love’ Adoptathon, where we will be joining other SPCAs around the country in finding homes for shelter animals in our Newtown and Kapiti centres. Both the Kapiti and Newtown centres will be decorated with a Valentine’s Day theme and open from 10am-4pm during this weekend, with people encouraged to come in and view the wonderful selection of animals waiting for a loving family to take them home. At last years’ Adoptathon over 60 animals found homes over the weekend – about three times the normal adoption levels for a weekend – and Wellington SPCA is keen to better this total in 2012.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page – http://www.facebook.com/wellingtonspca – for more details of the wonderful cats, kittens, puppies and dogs that we’ll have available this weekend, or check otu the Adopt A Pet section of our website. There will also be a feature in the Dominion Post this Friday which will catalog all of our furry friends.
