The windows of Lambton Quay’s The Body Shop will be filled with wagging tails and panting faces this Friday, as six SPCA puppies vie for the chance to find a loving family.
Wellington SPCA will again be holding a ‘Puppy in the Window’ event at the busy The Body Shop store on Lambton Quay store, all in an effort to find homes for a large number of puppies in its care. The Newtown and Waikanae animal centres are currently looking for homes for over 50 canines.
The six puppies will be on display at the store from midday onwards, with shoppers encouraged to both interact with the animals and take away information on volunteering for Wellington SPCA.
Wellington SPCA spokesperson James Craw says that the event has drawn a lot of attention in past years, and is a unique way for the Society to find positive outcomes for animals in its care.
“It’s a great opportunity for people out on their lunch breaks to come and fall in love with one of the puppies on display, and to talk with our staff about what it means to be a responsible pet owner.”
Wellington SPCA staff will be on hand during the event to answer questions about adopting an animal, as well as to make clear the on-going commitments that puppy and dog owners will typically face.
“It’s important that people are fully informed about the time, effort and money that goes into being a responsible pet owner – we want these puppies to go to good, loving homes where people will look after them,” Mr Craw said.
The Body Shop spokesperson Ansonia Todd-Smith says that it’s an initiative they are delighted to be part of.
“We are proud to provide Wellington SPCA with an opportunity to reach out to the public and encourage the adoption of puppies that are in need of a loving home. We salute Wellington SPCA and their hard work in looking after unwanted and abandoned pets, regaining their health, and ultimately finding a new home where they can receive the love they deserve.”
The adoption fee for the puppies on show will be $295 each, which helps to cover the cost of desexing, microchipping, worming and flea treatment. Prospective owners will be encouraged to go home and think things over before making a final decision to adopt.
Wellington SPCA will be looking to run these events on a regular basis in the future, along with a “kitten in the window” variation. They are currently the only SPCA centre in the country to run an adoption event of this nature.
