News about Nessie

NessieLast week we made a very special plea about Nessie, the beautiful cat currently in our care who is suffering from the condition Hyperthyroidism.

Our great friends at Wadestown Vets had very kindly offered to provide Nessie with the radioactive iodine treatment that will hopefully rid her of her condition.

Despite their fabulous offer to provide this at a reduced cost to us, we still needed to raise the remaining funds to pay for Nessie’s treatment.

And that’s where our supporters have proven to us something we already knew … that they are awesome!! We decided to close the appeal this afternoon as the donations we had received had well and truly blown our target of $495 out of the water!!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that due to the amazing generosity of our supporters, we have received a staggering $1,780 for the Nessie appeal!!

This amazing result means that not only will Nessie be able to receive the treatment she needs, but we’ve also been able to make a fantastic opening contribution to the fund we’ve set up that will enable us to provide care for other animals that may require specialist treatment.

We are funded entirely by donations. We do not receive any government funding and rely on the generosity of our supporters to enable us to provide our life-saving work for thousands of animals every year. If you would like to make a contribution to help other animals like Nessie, then we would love to hear from you – head to our donation page.

We’ll keep you posted on Nessie’s progress and hope to be able to report that she’s heading to her new forever home as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Pints for Pets – only two more chances left!

Here’s a gentle reminder for those of you who might need one…

There’s only two more Mondays left this month, which means you’ve only got two more chances to get down to The Malthouse in Wellington and support their awesome ’Pints for Pets’ promotion.

Just pop along on Monday night with a couple of tins of pet food (kitten and puppy food would be awesome) and the guys will give you your first tap beer for just $5!

All the  food will be donated to us and will help us feed some of the 5,000 hungry animals we care for each and every year.

Nessie needs your help

Nessie

We often make special pleas here on our website for animals in our care that desperately need to find their loving forever home – and we often see them heading out the door soon afterwards.

This time we have a very different ask, but one we hope you can support us with.

Meet Nessie – a super-friendly, cuddly eight year-old cat who’s been in our care since February. She had been seen hanging around a nearby Wellington suburb for about three years, but no-one appeared to be claiming ownership of her, so when a concerned resident noticed she was starting to lose weight, they brought her to us.

Our veterinary team gave Nessie a full check and discovered she had a condition called Hyperthyroidism – a common hormonal disorder occurring in elderly cats caused by an increase in production and secretion of the thyroid hormone. Thankfully, the condition is treatable, but one method would involve Nessie receiving daily medication for the rest of life – a huge financial burden for us to carry if she were to remain in our care.

The thing is, other than this specific condition, Nessie is in great health and as a result, our vets believe that she is a fantastic candidate to receive radioactive iodine treatment. This special procedure not only selectively destroys the affected thyroid tissue and any other areas of tissue that may be inaccessible by surgery, but also doesn’t have any serious side-effects, doesn’t require an anaesthetic and reduces the likelihood of the condition reoccurring.

However, we do not have the facilities to carry out this treatment but the awesome team at Wadestown veterinary clinic have very kindly stepped up and have offered to give Nessie the radioactive iodine treatment  - and for $200 less than the normal price. However, the treatment will still cost us $495.

This is where you come in!!

Please make a donation today to help this very special cat. Go to our website to make a donation online or call our donation hotline on 04 389 7387. Please make sure you clearly state that your donation is for the ‘Nessie the cat appeal’.

It would be great if we could exceed our target of $495 and if we do, we’ll set up a fund to go towards helping other animals in our care who may need specialist care or treatment.

Nessie needs this treatment as soon as possible, so we’ve set ourselves the target of 4th April to raise the money. If she receives this treatment, the likelihood is that she’ll be cured of the illness and would be able to be heading off to her loving forever home really soon!

Thank you!

The earthquake has left me without a home

Gordie

This is Gordie. Gordie came to us as a very young pup and we were delighted when we found him a home at just four months old.

Unfortunately, circumstances changed for Gordie’s owners and they were unable to care for him any longer. Since then Gordie has been passed from pillar to post and has spent time with four different foster carers in homes all across the country.

Hopes were raised, however, when Gordie’s current foster carer Elizabeth found him a fantastic new home in Christchurch. But just as his life was getting back on track, the Christchurch earthquake hit leaving Gordie’s owners no longer in a position to offer him a home and he found himself back in Wellington in the Elizabeth’s amazing care.

But Gordie’s saga isn’t over. Elizabeth is due to move oversees in just three months’ time.

So, we’re making this very special plea for this very special dog. This is what Elizabeth had to say about this awesome dog:

I’m moving overseas in three months, otherwise there is no question that I’d keep him forever, I love him so much!

He’s timid and shy at first, but get to know this cutie and he’s the most glorious and loyal friend you’ll ever have.

He is super friendly and cuddly, loves sprinting as fast as possible, nibbling on your finger nails and trying to curl up in a ball on your lap to sleep. He has lots of other funny quirks (the other day he got a fright from a butterfly garden ornament) and is very charming.

He’s in perfect health, is up-to-date with all his vaccinations/worming etc. and has been neutered.

He’d suit a family with kids, a younger person, or someone older but with a bit of energy and enthusiasim for playing. He’s not the best at living with other pets, but he does absolutely love playing with other dogs at the park, beach etc. – he’s very sociable.

If can find a place in your heart and your home for him – forever – we want to hear from you!! Ask to speak to one of our canine team today on 04 389 8044.

You can even become a fan of Gordie on Facebook!

Can you give us your time?

Volunteer staff are the lifeblood of Wellington SPCA.

Without the dedication and commitment of heaps of wonderful people who give us their time week after week, month after month, much of what we achieve would not be possible.

And we’re in desperate need of many more people who can spare a few hours a week helping to care for our animals. We particularly need people who can make a long-term commitment  (over 6 months or more).

Below are some of the volunteer roles that we urgently need to fill.

If you can help us, please complete this application form. Email it to acst@wellingtonspca.org.nz with ‘Volunteer Application’ in the subject line or print it out and send it to Volunteer Applications, Wellington SPCA, PO Box 7069, Newtown, Wellington 6021.

Please make sure you also include a copy of your CV if the job description asks for it. Once we receive your application we will get in contact with you and may invite you in for an interview.

Thank you!

Breakfast with the SPCA in Canterbury

ARU

With so much human tragedy, it’s easy to forget that there are many pets who have suffered as a result of the quake.

Wellington SPCA’s Animal Rescue Unit and Massey University’s Veterinary Emergency Response Team have been involved right at the centre of the action, helping to rescue trapped animals, returining lost animals to their owners and providing veterinary care and support to the brave Urban Rescue search dogs – with their sore paws and achy limbs.

We are very proud to be able to provide the animals and pet owners of Canterbury with our services and hope that the good news stories of pets being reunited with their owners keep coming.

But, ARU need your help to keep providing their life-saving work. Please consider making a donation today.

Check out more news coverage from the teams down in Christchurch helping to care for and reunite hundreds of displaced animals following last week’s earthquake:

  • Canterbury SPCA’s Geoff Sutton talks on TV One’s Breakfast programme about how ARU have been helping them
  • Hayley Squance from the Vet Emergency Response Team talks to Lucas from TV One’s Breakfast programme about how they’ve been helping care for the search dogs

Some thank you’s

On behalf of Carolyn – owner of Huha Charitable Trust (and Wellington SPCA board member)  we would like to send a huge thank you to RD1 for supplying and transporting a 5,000 litre tank to provide 50 horses from a  riding school in Heathcote with life-saving water (as well as some other useful items). Their generosity and the quick-thinking of Carolyn has already hit the press – Wellington woman’s horse mercy mission!!

We would also like to say a huge thank you to Simillimum Homeopathic Pharmacy and Arthur Holmes Ltd who didn’t miss a beat when we asked them to donate 400 bottles of Rescue Remedy – to help ease the stress of humans and animals caught up in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake.
