ARU and VERT training – perfect timing

ARU and Massey University's Veterinary Emergency Response TeamLast week we reported that our Animal Rescue Team had (very) recently helped to establish and train the Massey University Emergency Veterinary Response Team (VERT).

It would seem that this training couldn’t have come at a better time. On Sunday the team arrived in Christchurch to assist in the rescue effort following the earthquake.

They spent this morning receiving briefings from Urban Search and Rescue and will now be assisting those teams. We’ll keep you updated as and when we receive news as to how and where the guys are putting their skills to use.

In the meantime, below are some photos taken during the VERT training that took place last weekend, along with some of the media featuring the team as they assist USAR teams and Canterbury SPCA in Christchurch.

Please don’t forget – our ARU is staffed entirely by volunteers. If you would like to make a donation to help cover some of their costs (running their vehicles; staff cover for team members who work for Wellington SPCA etc) you can call our donation hotline on 04 389 7387 or online here.

So far we have received $500 in donations to help support the team in their vital work. Thank you to everyone who has donated – you’re really helping to make a difference.

Thank you.

Pups on Parade (formerly known as Woof for Waitangi Day)!!

Thanks to our awesome friends at emBARKERS Hound Lounge, Cafe Polo and Lush Puppies who raised a fabulous $345.60 last weekend at the ‘Pups on Parade’ event.

The event was a great success and from the photos (below) it sure looks like the pooches had an awesome time. The cup and pup cakes provided by the team at Cafe Polo sure looked mighty tasty too!

We are looking forward to more doggy-tastic events in the future!

Sending our help to Christchurch

Wellington SPCA's Animal Rescue Unit

Following the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, our voluntary Animal Rescue Unit are being deployed this weekend to help with the rescue efforts.

The team of eight, who are due to leave for Chrsitchurch on Sunday, will be assisting with Urban Rescue Teams in a number of animal-welfare related activities; assisting Canterbury SPCA at their animal centre; carrying out house-to-house searches in evacuation zones and areas of devestation; rescuing any animals that may have been abandoned or are unable to be cared for; and helping to reunite lost animals with their owners.

ARU are all volunteers and their work is funded entirely by donations. They need your help to allow them to continue doing this life-saving work  - please make a donation today.

About ARU

The Animal Rescue Team is a volunteer group that provides a technical rescue service for trapped animals. They specialise in high-angle rescue with an emphasis on the welfare of the trapped animal.

ARU volunteers are trained for situations where animals are stuck on cliffs, in trees, in restricted spaces (like under a house or in between office buildings), or even in holes in the ground. They are also trained to assist animals in Civil Defence emergencies such as the Christchurch earthquake.

The team were recently featured on TVNZ News setting up and training New Zealand’s second-only technical animal rescue group – the Massey University Veterinary Emergency Response Team. Watch the clip here.

Preparing for an emergency

Animal Rescue Unit

You may have seen our awesome Animal Rescue Team on the news last night. They were being featured after spending the weekend helping to train vets in emergency animal rescue techniques.

Those that were being trained now make up the Massey University Veterinary Emergency Response Team – New Zealand’s second-only technical animal rescue capable group.

The skills taught by the team will help to ensure that more veterinary professionals are able to assist with animal welfare emergencies at times of disaster, like the Canterbury earthquake for example.

Check out the video here.

The one that Cupid missed

Eddie

For Eddie, Cupid’s arrow was way-off target this Valentine’s Day and he has once again been left with a broken heart.

The super-friendly and gentle 14 month-old crossbreed, who has been in our care for over four months, was overlooked for adoption at Wellington SPCA’s Second Chance for Love adopt-a-thon which took place over this Valentine’s weekend.

Eddie is now desperate for a loving family to take him to his new home and show him just how good life can be.

But for many of the other animals in our care, Cupid was working overtime at our adopt-a-thon. The event was a fantastic success with 66 animals (including 21 adult cats) finding their perfect soul-mate – and all just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The adopt-a-thon was supported by the SPCA’s sponsor, Hill’s Science Diet, who was on-hand to give away fantastic starter packs, freebies and spot prizes.

One of the many ‘happy tails’, and a real second chance story to come out of the weekend, was China’s, a one-year-old Labrador crossbreed. China was surrendered to us following allegations that her neck had been stomped on whilst in her then owner’s care. She soon became a favourite of all the staff at our Newtown centre, spending lots of time in the office. So, it was with much delight that we finally saw her getting her Second Chance and being adopted over the weekend. What made the story even more heart-warming was that she was rehomed along with another of our puppies, Kate.

Our inspectors have been busily carrying out property inspections and our centres will be brimming with excited new owners as they come in to pick up their new family members and take them to their new forever homes.

Despite the fantastic results of the adopt-a-thon, our centres are still stretched to capacity – we are caring for over 230 animals in our centres at present and have 210 animals currently in foster care. A major contributory factor in these huge numbers is a lack of responsibility being shown by pet owners, who continue to fail to desex and microchip their animals. These two straightforward procedures would see hundreds of animals being saved from abandonment and would ensure more lost animals were able to be reunited with their owners.

We are constantly in need of permanent homes for the animals in our care. Public misconceptions continue to exist regarding the fate of the animals in our care. Wellington SPCA is committed to the ‘Saving Lives’ philosophy and part of this is a commitment to a no time limit policy – any animal fit for adoption will remain in our care until a home can be found. This policy has resulted in numerous animals remaining with us for many, many months – just like Eddie. But we will continue to do work tirelessly to ensure he, and as many of the unwanted, homeless animals in our care, get the second chance they deserve.
