The Hound Dog and Cafe Polo do Cupcake Day!
Being Bird Smart on the radio
Wellington SPCA’s animal welfare inspector Brett Lahman was recently interviewed on Access Radio’s Animal Rights and Wrongs programme.
Brett had been invited to go along to the show to talk about an issue that the SPCA has to deal with at this time of year, every year.
Spring sees the Society being inundated with calls from concerned members of the public about baby birds they have discovered out of the nest. Inspector Lahman explains the best course of action to take and how, in most instances, human intervention can be detrimental to the bird’s welfare.
You can listen to the full interview here (fast forward to 20’30″ to the start of the interview).
To get more information about what you should do if you discover a baby bird, you can go to our website.
Cupcake day on Good Morning
Check out us out on our regular appearance on the Good Morning show this morning.
Wellington SPCA animal welfare inspector Ben Lakomy had a natter with Hadyn about budgies and cupcakes!
Our slot today was mainly to promote Cupcake Day which is just around the corner – on Monday in fact!
We also took along a couple of budgies that are currently in our care and as a result of the show, we have received dozens of calls and emails from people interested in offering them a new home!
We’ll keep you posted on the budgies’ progress and remember to support Wellington SPCA on Monday and buy a cupcake!!
Cupcake countdown!!
There’s only one week to go until we all go cupcake crazy!!
Here’s your chance to show your support for Wellington SPCA – and it’s so easy to get involved!
Just bake and sell a batch or two of yummy cupcakes and donate the proceeds to us.
Official registrations to become a cupcake cook have now closed but you can still go to the website for all the information about how to get involved.
Please remember to use free-range eggs in your cupcakes!!
So why not get your friends round for a baking party, make some cakes to sell to your schoolmates or treat your colleagues to a coffee time treat?!
Thanks for your support and happy baking!!
Donate your doggy’s old digs!
Part of animal welfare inspector’s role is to ensure that animals get appropriate care from their owners. Part of a responsible pet owner’s role is to provide an animal with adequate shelter.
Occasionally our inspectors will help an owner out by providing more appropriate shelter – especially for those who cannot afford to make the required improvements.
However, for our inspectors to be able to do this, they rely on the generosity of the public to donate their unwanted or used kennels.
So, if you want to help us to help the community, get in touch. We’d love to hear from you if you have a plastic or wood kennel that’s still in good condition – ones with minor repairs aren’t a problem.
And we’re happy to come and collect them from you if you can’t drop them into our Newtown animal centre.
If you can help, give our inspectors a call today on 04 389 8044 ext. 812.
Thanks!

Follow us on Twitter
You can now follow Wellington SPCA on Twitter!
We have set up a rather nifty tweet service that automatically sends out a Tweet each and every time an animal becomes available for adoption.
You can then link to our website and find out all you need to know about that animal and hopefully be able to offer them a loving forever home.
Our auto-Tweets also lets you know when an animal has found a new home and will soon be listing animals that are ‘lost’ and brought into us – to help reunite animals with their owners.
So, what are you waiting for – get following us at http://twitter.com/WgtnSPCA !
It’s time for a spring clean

Our Newtown animal centre is in dire need of a spruce-up!
We’d love to brighten up our cat and dog runs, freshen up the rabbit hutches and clean up the cat houses.
So, we’re on the hunt for donations of paint – unwanted tester pots, half tins, full tins - whatever you can spare will be gratefully received.
You can drop your donations of paint into either our Newtown or Waikanae animal centre at any time.
Thank you!!
Adopt a pet from us today!
We have over 300 animals currently in our care and many of these animals are available for adoption and in need of a new home right now!
So, here’s your chance to make a fantastic addition to your family and to give an animal another chance in life.
There are a number of ways you can check out our animals who are just waiting for their new forever home:
Our off-site adoption events
Every few months we take our animals out and about around the Wellington region to try and find them homes. It’s a great way to see if you can adopt a pet from us and saves you a journey into the bargain!
Our next off-site adoption event is at Newlands Community Centre, 9 Batchelor Street, Newlands, Wellington (click here for a map) on Saturday 21 August from 10am to 2pm. It’s free to come along but all our normal adoption criteria apply.
Our website
We have a whole section of our website dedicated to animals available for adoption. This is regularly updated and in most cases carries a little bit of a story about each animal.
Our animal centre
You can always come down to our animal centres in Newtown or Waikanae, meet the animals in person and have a chat with the caregivers about who might be best suited to you.
The Dominion Post
Every fortnight we have a half-page advertisement in The Dominion Post, featuring 21 of our animals and sometimes featuring a special pet who urgently needs to go to a loving home.
Trademe
From time to time we feature a few very special animals who are struggling with centre life and who we are really keen to find new homes for – and fast! So these get posted up on Trademe.
We are always in need of lots of caring and kind people to open their homes and their hearts to the animals in our care and give them the opportunity to get the life they deserve.
Can you adopt from Wellington SPCA today?
Young Animal Ambassadors
Wellington SPCA’s Kid’s Club takes place every month and children aged 6-12 years can come along to take part in an afternoon packed with fun, educational games and activities and the chance to meet some special animal friends.
This month we will be learning more about the SPCA and what they can do to help animals in the community.
The annual SPCA Cupcake Day is just around the corner, so we’ll be putting on our chef’s hats to decorate some tasty cupcakes. We will be putting on a bake sale to sell our fancy decorated cupcakes at the end to raise money for Wellington SPCA.
If you fancy coming along to this cool event, take a look at the flyer and print off the application form here and send it to Jennifer Rizzi, Wellington SPCA, PO Box 7069, Newtown, Wellington 6242. Spaces are limited so bookings are essential.
When: Saturday 21 August from 4.30pm to 6.30pm
Where: Newtown Hall, cnr of Daniell and Constable Streets, Newtown
Cost: $15 per child
If you’d like more information about our Kid’s Club you can email Jen at JenniferR@wellingtonspca.org.nz or call her on 04 389 8044 ext 827.
