Easter treat for cat lovers

AngelThis Easter weekend Wellington SPCA will be taking a whole bunch of fabulous felines to the Dominion Short Haired Cat Club Inc. event in Lower Hutt.

But our cats won’t be there on show – they’ll all be there hoping to find a fabulous forever home.

We have over 100 cats currently in our care and in desperate need of a home. If you’ve been thinking of adopting a cat then this is the perfect time to do it - come along and see if you can find your new best friend.

The event takes place at Lower Hutt Town Hall, Laings Road, Lower Hutt this Easter Saturday (3 April) from 9am to 3pm.

Hope to see you there!

Sorting out the strays

Cat colony

Wellington SPCA and other animal welfare organisations spend a huge amount of time and effort trying to find homes for the large numbers of cats brought into their centres each year. But these efforts are often thwarted by the vast number of kittens that also end up in their care.

However, these kittens are not the litters of house cats. More often than not, they are the offspring of long-term stray cats - the second cousins of lost or abandoned house cats. These stray cats have adapted to outdoor life and developed colonies that centre around areas where food is plentiful, for example around refuse bins in urban areas, or in rural areas with large numbers of rodents.

These strays are wary of people and frequently go unnoticed - until their numbers increase or a litter of kittens is delivered in someone’s garage or under their porch.  Typically, the property owner will then trap the cat and kittens and bring them to an animal welfare centre, where the un-socialised adults will be euthanized and the kittens, where possible, will be socialized and made available for adoption.

While this practice eliminates the visible cats from the territory, it does not solve the problem. Before long, other roaming strays will move in to the area to take advantage of the freed-up food source. They in turn will reproduce and once again, the area will become over-run.

Trap – Neuter – Return

We know that we can’t entirely eliminate stray cats from an area (no matter how many we remove) but, we can greatly reduce their numbers through a managed Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programme.

This programme involves trapping and desexing the stray cats and then returning them to their colony so that they can continue to guard their food source – and so deter new roaming cats from moving into the area.

Through this practice, the very cats that are at the root of the over-population problem, can become the solution to it!

CatHow can you be a part of this?

Wellington SPCA, with the support of Wellington City Council, are in the process of setting up a managed cat colony in the Strathmore area.

Step One: desex and microchip all owned cats in the targeted area. Wellington SPCA will be offering discounted desexing to residents.

Step two: organize a group of concerned residents that is interested in being a part of the programme. The group will need to be dedicated and passionate about supporting a positive solution to stray cat over-population.

If you would like to would like to get involved with this initiative, or would like to receive more information about managed cat colonies, you are invited to call Jo at Wellington SPCA on (04) 389 8044 ext. 810 or email her at jod@wellingtonspca.org.nz

 Thank you.

The not-so shaggy sheep

Before ...

Before ...

He may have dodged a bullet, but the ‘Johnsonville Shrek’ wasn’t able to escape a team lead by Wellington SPCA.

The renegade, who had been living free for the last two years following his escape from the local abattoir, was finally captured on Saturday.

“It was important to get the sheep into a home before winter, as there was real concern that if his fleece had become wet, he wouldn’t have been able to get up” said Ben Lakomy of Wellington SPCA, who led the team of animal welfare professionals and animal wranglers involved in his capture.

..and after

..and after

“Now that we know he is actually a male, however, I’m not sure he would appreciate being named ‘Alison, wonder lamb’” said Ben (just one of the many names that had been suggested by readers of The Dominion Post who had been following the sheep saga).

Despite the burden of his enormous fleece, which was around 5kg in weight and measured about 6m², and the use of very efficient heading dogs, the sheep was still able to give the team the run-around.

The fleece!

The fleece!

“He was certainly a very feisty boy and wasn’t too happy about being handled” reported Ben.

However, since his capture, the sheep has been rehomed at the Huha Animal Sanctuary in Kaitoke and has already made some new friends. And keep an eye out on TradeMe – the fleece might be put up for auction very soon!!

Fall in love with a fantastic feline

I'm Gummy Bear - I need a home!

I'm Gummy Bear - I need a home!

Our Newtown animal centre is fit to burst with adult cats all desperately in need of loving new homes.

We are currently caring for over 70 adult cats (those over 6 months old) but we’ve pretty much run out of space for them all. So, we’re making an urgent plea to anyone who can give one of our fabulous felines a second chance and a new home.

And as added incentive, during March we have two fantastic offers for anyone who gives a home to one of our adult cats!

  • You will automatically be entered into a draw to win one night’s deluxe accommodation, a bottle of champagne and breakfast for two people at Wellington’s ‘ohtel’
  • We are also giving away a free starter pack worth $100 to anyone who adopts one of our cats! The pack is bursting with great gifts including Frontline flea treatment, cat litter, Hill’s cat food and a fantastic pair of Hill’s slippers (you may have seen TVNZ’s Brendon Pongia modelling them on last Wednesday’s Good Morning show!)

Fabulous friends

I'm Dominic - can you love me?

I'm Dominic - can you love me?

Adult cats make fantastic pets. By just 7 months old they have developed their own unique character and have a good idea of what they like and dislike. And our caregivers know all of the cats in our centre very well and are on-hand to help you discover the perfect cat for you.

So why not come down to our Newtown animal centre and see if one of our cute kitties could be your new forever friend? You can also check out the adoption pages on our website to see just some of the cats who need a new home!
