Kitten crisis grabs media attention

clydeWith almost 250 kittens currently in our care, we are still in desperate need for people to offer homes to these adorable animals, on either a temporary or permanent basis.

This current deluge of kittens is a problem facing SPCA centres all over the country and it’s one that occurs every year.

Wellington SPCA strongly encourages responsible pet ownership by having pets desexed, preventing unwanted litters. This would make a huge difference to the numbers of kittens, and other animals, that come through our doors.

Recent media coverage has gone some way to highlighting our crisis and has resulted in about 30 new fosterers coming forward offering temporary homes – which is fantastic! You can watch a report that was featured on TV3 (23 December) by clicking here or read the online version here. You can also read our article featured in The Dominion Post (23 December) here.

However, we still need help! In the New Year, our focus will be finding permanent homes for all the kittens who will have returned from foster and will be ready for adoption (we need to desex them before they can go to a new forever home).finn

If you think you can offer a home to a kitten, or any of the 700 animals currently in our care, please contact us on 04 389 8044. Go to our adoption page to check  out some of our fabulous animals who would love for you to offer them a loving home.

The spirit of Christmas!

Jenna entertaining the crowds

Jenna entertaining the crowds

Jenna Siladi wanted to do something to help Wellington SPCA help the animals over our busy Christmas period.

So she gathered a group of learner violin players together, and they played Christmas songs outside Capital on the Quay on Saturday 19 December.

Proud parents and family members watched as Jenna (8), Anahera Kohu-Smith (9), Georgie (7) and Hugo (6) entertained Christmas shoppers, assisted by their violin teacher Tania Dyett.

Georgie and Hugo have only been playing violin since February this year, Anahera since July, and Jenna since April.

Jenna and her friends raised $140 for Wellington SPCA. Thanks Jenna!

Making Christmas wishes come true

Adoption day at Maungaraki Community Centre

Adoption day at Maungaraki Community Centre

For some of the animals in our care, this Christmas is going to be one of their best yet!

Over the weekend, we held an adoption ‘extravaganza’ at five locations around Wellington and as a result, 39 animals have now found loving new homes. This included 20 kittens, six cats, four puppies, five dogs, three mice and one rabbit!

With approximately 700 animals currently in our care, the adoption event aimed to try and find homes for as many of them as possible.

And despite it being the last shopping weekend before Christmas, the public ‘s response was fabulous and it was great to see animals leaving our shelters with their new families.

On behalf of the animals, we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend such a success.

Wellington SPCA achieves landmark sentence

Lincoln

Wellington SPCA is quietly celebrating following the sentencing yesterday of  William Kain Campbell who was involved in a sickening dog fight earlier this year. The fight  involved Lincoln, a 14 year-old Ridgeback cross breed that he had stolen to use as bait in the fight.

Mr Campbell received a 10 month prison sentence and became the first person in New Zealand to go to jail for dogfighting. He also received a lifetime ban that means he can never own a ‘companion’ animal again. Mr Campbell will also have to pay over $4,000 in costs.

“The sentence is a major achievement for animal welfare in this country,  as well as for Wellington SPCA”, said Peter Mason, Wellington SPCA’s Executive Director. “We hope that the sentence sends a strong message to anyone involved in this type of brutal activity that they will be caught and dealt with harshly by the courts.”

The case was brought to the courts through the joint efforts of Wellington SPCA, Porirua Police and Animal Control.

A strong message

Lincoln

In April this year, Campbell unlawfully took Lincoln from a property in Titahi Bay. After transporting him in the boot of his car to a park, he used him as bait for his own dog, Duke, to violently attack.

Judge Geoff Ellis said to Campbell that what he did was ”truly despicable” and that Campbell’s actions were “brutality of the worst kind towards an animal”.

During the fight Campbell not only encouraged his dog to attack Lincoln, but had also physically inflicted further injury by trying to break Lincoln’s hind leg. After the fight, Campbell did not seek veterinary treatment for the injuries inflicted on either dog and abandoned Lincoln at the scene, where he was found cowering in a public toilet.

Traumatic

Both dogs survived the fight but have been left with physical and emotional injuries. The incident has also been very traumatic for Lincoln’s owners;

“They have been very brave throughout their ordeal” commented Ben Lakomy, the Wellington SPCA animal welfare inspector involved with the case. “We hope the knowledge that the man who acted so violently towards their dog has now been held accountable for his actions will enable them to move forward”.lincoln

Dukes is being cared for at an animal shelter and will be assessed for adoption.

There has been a great deal of media coverage of the case – there are links below to the news reports from yesterday’s sentencing. Please be aware that the video content is graphic and shows the dogs fighting.

Room at the inn?

Comet

Comet

We are desperately searching for volunteers who can offer a temporary home to some of our fabulous dogs.

With Christmas just around the corner, we really need to find a place to stay for some of our pups.

Dog fosterers play a very important role at Wellington SPCA by providing short-term accommodation to dogs in our care, when we just simply don’t have the space for them at our shelters.

There are a few criteria you’ll need to be able to meet to become a fosterer. However, if you have lots of love to give and care about animals, we would love to hear from you - soon!!

To find out more please contact Rochelle as soon as possible on 04 389 8044 ext: 830 or email her at RochelleP@wellingtonspca.org.nz.Joan Jett

Doggy fodder

While you’re planning your yummy Christmas lunch, spare a thought for our pooches.

We’ve got lots of mouths to feed and so we are asking you to help us this Christmas by donating tins of wet dog and puppy food for our hungry pups.

Just take your donations of tins of food along to either our Newtown or Kapiti shelters and we’ll gladly accept them!

Thank you!
