Street Appeal beats all records

'cOw-en'

The buckets have been emptied, the money’s been counted and the total is in!

Our annual street appeal has raised an amazing total of $46,400!! This money will make a huge difference to the lives of the thousands of animals that need our help every year.

“This is a fantastic result. As a local charity we receive no direct government funding, so days like this are really important to us. We’re particularly grateful that despite the current economic climate, people still dug deep for us.”    Peter Mason, Executive Director,  Wellington SPCA.

Puppy in the windowThe appeal would not have been possible without help from the hundreds of volunteers who spent time out on the streets, collecting for us in Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt and in Kapiti.

So, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all those who helped make the day such a sucess.

And remember, even if you missed our street day appeal this year, you can make a donation to us at any time – just click here to find out how.

2009 Annual Report

Front page

This year’s report is dedicated to our staff.

The tireless commitment and passion they show day in, day out for the animals in our care is staggering.

Without their love and generosity of spirit, we could not do what we do.

Student pleads guilty to starving her puppy

MystiqueA woman appeared in Wellington District Court today to plead guilty to one charge of failing to provide an adequate diet for an animal in her care.

Wellington SPCA inspectors discovered her severely weak and emaciated puppy struggling to stand and with its bones clearly visible.

The defendant, Naomi Williams, had admitted that she thought the puppy, Mystique, was ‘skinny’ but thought this was due to her being ‘part greyhound’.

Ms Williams was sentenced to 60 hours community service, ordered to pay Wellington SPCA costs of $3235.69 and solicitors fees of $250, and was disqualified from owning or caring for any dog for up to 5 years.

The SPCA veterinary surgeon who first examined Mystique confirmed that the sole cause of her  condition was due to a lack of food and that she could have died without intervention.

Mystique, who has been in the care of Wellington SPCA, was surrendered to the society by the defendant.

‘Closed for Good’ – good for us!

Closed for good 2

On Wednesday 4th November, BNZ branches throughout New Zealand took part in the first ever ‘Closed for Good’, that saw staff heading out into the community to help with a whole range of projects.

Wellington SPCA’s Newtown shelter were very lucky to have the help of 50 willing volunteers for the day.

The team worked hard sprucing up various areas of the shelter and with help from Dulux paint, both the cat run and the staff room were given a much needed lick of paint.

Our volunteers also lent a hand dropping hundreds of fliers through doors in the neighbourhood to promote upcoming events; sorting through piles of toys for the puppies; providing enrichment for our animals and lots of dog walking!Closed for good 1

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at BNZ, as well as Dulux, for their generous support. A job well done!

SPCA staff lends a hand to the community

volunteer article

volunteer article 2

The Wellington SPCA relies heavily on volunteers to help care for a huge number of animals that come into the shelter. We are lucky to have a great team of volunteers who work with us 7 days a week. Without our volunteers the Wellington SPCA would not be as successful as it is.

To show our appreciation a group of staff members have been going out into the community to help other organizations. This year we have been lucky enough to help out with two different organizations, planting native trees in Belmont Regional Park and painting at the Skylight centre in Newtown.

We hope that by our staff going out into the community we can lead by example, to show that by volunteering a bit of your time, you can help make such a big difference in your community.

Thank you Mitre 10 MEGA Petone!

mega1 mega2
A big thank you to Mitre 10 MEGA in Petone for hosting a Dog Squad collection at their store. It was a fantastic fundraiser! We are pleased to confirm collectors raised $2,625.50, which is a great effort.

We receive no central or local government funding, so it is only because of donations from kind people, like Mitre 10 MEGA Petone and the people in our community, that we are able to rescue and rehome the most vulnerable animals in Wellington.

If you are interested in hosting a dog squad collection at your store, please contact Trina at trinah@wellingtonspca.org.nz.
