Andrew in his costume training for Sunday's marathon

Wellington SPCA is pleased to have been selected as the charity of choice of Andrew Smith.  Andrew is running the marathon in Wellington this weekend dressed as a dog.  His fundraising efforts have already raised almost $600 to help us care for Wellington’s homeless, abused, neglected and unwanted animals.

Anyone who would like to sponsor Andrew on his run can make an online donation.  Please put ‘Andrew Smith’ as the reason for the donation and help him get to his $1,000 fundraising target.

Roosters from Saturday night’s Rugby

Tricolore

Tricolore

Wellington SPCA is currently caring for three roosters that were taken to Saturday night’s Rugby game as mascots by French supporters.

Tricolore is still wearing his team’s colours as Wellington SPCA staff have not managed to clean the dye or paint off his feathers. He has been temporarily placed in a foster home so he can have dust baths to see if the colour on his feathers will come off. If not, he could be flying the French colours for up to six months until he moults.

Pepino, the rooster travelling the country with Frenchmen Laurent Bigot and Anthony Bigot, has been signed over to Wellington SPCA and will be going to live at an animal sanctuary.

The owners of the other two roosters, known by Wellington SPCA staff as Tricolore and Pepe Le Pew, are not known, so they will be held for 7 days to allow their owners to make contact with us.  If no owner comes forward Wellington SPCA will be looking for new homes where they can live in a free-range environment.

Anyone who is interested in offering a home to one of the roosters should contact us on 389 8044.

Help end the suffering of factory farmed pigs

spca-freerange-logoThe SPCA has renewed its call for a ban on sow stalls and farrowing crates.  The issue of the extreme confinement many pigs are forced to live in was highlighted on a recent edition of TVNZ’s Sunday programme.  Watch TV One’s Sunday programme footage.

Wellington SPCA is urging people to support the call for a ban on this barbaric form of farming.  You can help by:

  •  Only purchasing free-range pork/bacon labelled ‘free farmed’ or ‘free range’ or bearing the blue ‘SPCA Approved’ sticker on the packaging. This is not as expensive as you think! For example, at New World Chaffers Street on 9 June 2009, Freedom Farms free range pork chops were priced at only 26 cents a kilo more than non free range pork chops. Often these products are priced the same!
  •  Write to the Minister of Agriculture and express your disgust.

  •  Write to your local MP asking them to lobby the Minister of Agriculture to ban this sow stalls and farrowing crates. A list of MPs and their contact details can be found here
  •  Write to the Chairman of the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC), requesting immediate revision of the Code.
