The not-so shaggy sheep

Before ...

Before ...

He may have dodged a bullet, but the ‘Johnsonville Shrek’ wasn’t able to escape a team lead by Wellington SPCA.

The renegade, who had been living free for the last two years following his escape from the local abattoir, was finally captured on Saturday.

“It was important to get the sheep into a home before winter, as there was real concern that if his fleece had become wet, he wouldn’t have been able to get up” said Ben Lakomy of Wellington SPCA, who led the team of animal welfare professionals and animal wranglers involved in his capture.

..and after

..and after

“Now that we know he is actually a male, however, I’m not sure he would appreciate being named ‘Alison, wonder lamb’” said Ben (just one of the many names that had been suggested by readers of The Dominion Post who had been following the sheep saga).

Despite the burden of his enormous fleece, which was around 5kg in weight and measured about 6m², and the use of very efficient heading dogs, the sheep was still able to give the team the run-around.

The fleece!

The fleece!

“He was certainly a very feisty boy and wasn’t too happy about being handled” reported Ben.

However, since his capture, the sheep has been rehomed at the Huha Animal Sanctuary in Kaitoke and has already made some new friends. And keep an eye out on TradeMe – the fleece might be put up for auction very soon!!

I'm Gummy Bear - I need a home!

Our Newtown animal centre is fit to burst with adult cats all desperately in need of loving new homes.

We are currently caring for over 70 adult cats (those over 6 months old) but we’ve pretty much run out of space for them all. So, we’re making an urgent plea to anyone who can give one of our fabulous felines a second chance and a new home.

And as added incentive, during March we have two fantastic offers for anyone who gives a home to one of our adult cats!

  • You will automatically be entered into a draw to win one night’s deluxe accommodation, a bottle of champagne and breakfast for two people at Wellington’s ‘ohtel’
  • We are also giving away a free starter pack worth $100 to anyone who adopts one of our cats! The pack is bursting with great gifts including Frontline flea treatment, cat litter, Hill’s cat food and a fantastic pair of Hill’s slippers (you may have seen TVNZ’s Brendon Pongia modelling them on last Wednesday’s Good Morning show!)

Fabulous friends

Adult cats make fantastic pets. By just 7 months old they have developed their own unique character and have a good idea of what they like and dislike. And our caregivers know all of the cats in our centre very well and are on-hand to help you discover the perfect cat for you.

So why not come down to our Newtown animal centre and see if one of our cute kitties could be your new forever friend? You can also check out the adoption pages on our website to see just some of the cats who need a new home!

Desexing clinic moves on

Mobile desexing clinic

The SPCA's mobile desexing clinic

Wellington SPCA has waved goodbye to its mobile desexing clinic for another year, following a highly successful residency in Porirua that resulted in a staggering 304 animals being desexed.

The mobile clinic tours the length and breadth of the country encouraging pet owners to have their animals desexed and offering the service at no charge to those who are unable to afford it. A koha is suggested to help cover some of the costs.

“The fact that we have been able to desex over 300 animals at the clinic means we have potentially prevented up to 1,500 unwanted births” explains Peter Mason, Wellington SPCA’s Executive Director. “Wellington SPCA has to deal first-hand with the outcomes of uncontrolled breeding in pets, so providing this free service is one positive way we can tackle the issue.”

The clinic has been stationed in Porirua for the whole of February and was staffed by SPCA inspectors, veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons. As well as carrying out operations, staff used the opportunity to promote all aspects of responsible pet ownership, of which desexing is just one part.

The final day of the clinic’s visit coincided with International Spay Day – a worldwide campaign organised by The Humane Society of the United States. To acknowledge this event, Wellington SPCA carried out twice the number of desexing procedures than usual on the one day, at multiple locations – a total of 50 animals.

Man convicted for starving his dog

Daz was 20% below is ideal body weight

Daz was 20% below is ideal body weight

A Lower Hutt man who intentionally starved his dog ‘to teach it a lesson’, could have been facing a much stiffer penalty if proposed amendments to the Animal Welfare Act had already been in force.

Paulie Tamati Patu of Naenae was convicted last week after pleading guilty to intentionally restricting the amount of food he gave his dog, Daz, as punishment for chasing a cat. Daz was examined by a vet and found to be 20% below the minimum recommended weight for his breed, age and sex.

After just three weeks in the care of Wellington SPCA, he had returned to his ideal weight.

Daz following just 20 days of treatment

Mr Patu was sentenced to 200 hours community service, ordered to pay costs to the SPCA of $2,704 and was disqualified from owning a companion animal for 10 years. The judge also forfeited Daz into the care of Wellington SPCA.

Greater penalty

The proposed amendments to the Act would see an increase in the maximum sentence for the ‘wilful ill-treatment’ of an animal from three to five years imprisonment, along with a doubling of a fine to a maximum of $100,000.

“While we are pleased with the outcome of this particular case, we hope that the proposed changes will lead to much stronger sentences being handed down to those convicted of cruelty to animals in the future”  Peter Mason, Wellington SPCA’s Executive Director.

All loved up

Love well and truly blossomed for some of Wellington SPCA’s homeless animals this Valentine’s weekend.

Our ‘Second chance for love’ adopt-a-thon proved that love was definitely in the air, with new homes being found for almost 60 of our animals. Braving the temperamental Wellington weather, a huge number of people visited our animal centres in Newtown, Waikanae and Levin and for some it proved to be love at first sight!

Dean Thompson (pictured) visited our Newtown centre hoping to find the perfect kitten – and instead ended up falling for two! Two-month old Jaffa and Peanut caught Dean’s eye and were soon heading off to start their new lives in Wellington, helped along with some goodies provided courtesy of Hill’s Pet Nutrition™.

Of  the 60 animals who found new homes over the weekend, one of the most heart-warming stories belongs to Chelsi, a two-year-old Labrador crossbreed. Chelsi was found by the local pound living in car and was brought to the Newtown animal centre. She stayed for over six months, but as a result of Second Chance for Love, will very soon be settling into her new loving forever home.

Norm Hewitt and family (with Geppetto the rabbit)

The event also received support from SPCA Ambassador Norm Hewitt, who paid a visit to our Newtown centre with his wife and children. Norm leads the SPCA’s ’One of the family’ programme that promotes the importance of companion animals being part of the family and responsible pet ownership. Norm and family spent some time checking out the centre as well as getting cuddles from Geppetto the lop-eared rabbit!

Congratulations go to Debbie Brown of Island Bay who won the SPCA hamper after visiting the adopt-a-thon at our Newtown animal centre and simply completed a sign-in form!

Remember, you can still vote for your favourite SPCA centre at www.secondchanceforlove.co.nz and if you adopted an animal over the weekend, submit your story and photo to be in with a chance of winning a year’s supply of pet food from Hill’s Pet Nutrition™.
