Animal Caregiver: Feline and Small Animal Care Lead

The ideal candidate for this position will have a passion for animals and a strong skill set in the coordination of people and tasks.
With so many unwanted and neglected animals in the community and in the care of Wellington SPCA, the ideal candidate will understand that the way to achieve the outcomes for all the animals is to support, train and empower our strong and developing team of volunteer staff.
Role description
As part of the Feline and Small Animal Care Team, working alongside a strong and supportive team of staff and volunteers, to facilitate the care and adoption of the large numbers cats, kittens and other small animals that come into the Newtown centre
Purpose of Position
• To ensure animals in the care of the society find homes in the fastest way
• To provide care for the animals in the centre through coordinating the team of volunteers
• To ensure best practice disease control is followed
• To ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the animals and staff
• To work cooperatively with other members of the staff and volunteer staff to ensure that all tasks are completed according to established procedures
• To increase pet retention through ensuring successful adoptions
• To work with fosterers to ensure best care for the animals
Responsible for
• To provide guidance, support and training for all volunteer staff
• Working with volunteer staff and ensuring the skills and abilities of all volunteers are maximised where applicable
• Ensuring animals records are maintained
• Ensuring customer enquiries are dealt with
• Ensuring the care of animals awaiting new homes
• Ensuring the cleaning and restocking of centre areas
• Ensuring that animals receive all treatment required (alongside Vet Care Team)
Key skills required
• Logistic planning for care and movement of large numbers of animals
• Strong customer service skills
• Strong communication skills
• Confidence to work with a wide range of volunteers
• Self starter and able to prioritise, multitask and plan
• Accountability and ownership
• High Computer skills
• Appreciation of the challenges of working for a charity
• Empathy and confidence with all animals
Reports to the Animal Care and Adoptions Manager

Part of a team of SPCA staff and volunteers
Working hours
Rostered as part of team providing 7 day a week service
40 hours per week
Wellington SPCA cares for around 5,000 animals each year at our animal centres located in Newtown and Waikanae. We never turn away an animal in need of help. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused, neglected and unwanted animals and where appropriate take prosecutions under the Animal Welfare Act. Our veterinary practice also provides services to private clients. We are a registered charity.

Veterinary Nurse
The Wellington SPCA currently has a vacancy for an experienced veterinary nurse at the Newtown Centre. This is your chance to make a positive difference in the community by being an integral part of a highly-respected Wellington icon.
Reporting to the Practice manager / Senior veterinary nurse, this role will primarily focus on the provision of assistance to the veterinary surgeon both before, during and after procedures. The veterinary care team based at the Newtown Shelter provides for a wide range of animals, both in the care of the Wellington SPCA shelter and clients of Wellington SPCA vet clinic.
This exciting role also includes the general care of hospitalised animals, including pre/post-operative care and the feeding, monitoring, medicating and exercising of animals, as well as administration duties and liaison with animal owners and caregivers.
Key requirements for this role:
• Veterinary nursing qualifications (Certificate or Diploma NZQA equivalent) and min. three years experience as a Veterinary Nurse preferred
• Able to multi-task and easily adapt to a multitude of situations
• Ability to deal with the public in person and over the telephone
• Empathy towards all animals, and confidence and experience in handling a wide variety of animals (domestic, feral and wildlife)
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Able to educate, supervise and support volunteer staff
• Enthusiastic attitude and have willingness to up skill with in-house training and continuing education (supported by Wellington SPCA)
• Ideally able to start in time for the busy Christmas period.
