The Adoption Process
At Wellington SPCA we aim to find the best match between our homeless pets and their new owner. There is no "time limit" on the animals we have available for adoption. We will care for them until the right new owner comes through the door. We don't adopt pets out as surprise presents. If you want to adopt a pet as a gift for someone please bring them in to choose their new pet. Alternatively you can buy a voucher that covers the adoption fee so they can come in, meet all the animals available for adoption and pick the one that best suits them.
Our adoption process is individual to each and every applicant so please allow plenty of time when you come in to meet the animals available for adoption and find the best match. We will ask you lots of questions, and can give you lots of advice on settling your new pet into your home. We want you to think the decision to adopt a pet through carefully and be fully aware of the commitment, costs and challenges that come with pet ownership. We want you to view your new pet as part of your family and make a lifelong commitment to love and care for the animal. You need to be able to afford both the day-to-day care of your new pet and also unexpected vet bills should your pet get sick or injured.
You will need to consider what future plans you may have and include your pet in these plans. Many animals are surrendered to Wellington SPCA as their owners are moving to a different country. With a little planning these animals could have moved to a new country with their owner - it only costs around $500 to fly a cat to Australia.
